Pima Cotton
As with cashmere, wine or coffee, the quality of cotton can vary greatly. Thanks to ideal growing conditions, particularly long fibre lengths and hand harvesting, Peruvian pima cotton is the finest in the world and is prized for its exceptional softness, shimmering sheen and durability.
Ideal growing conditions in the coastal areas of Peru produce the best pima cotton in the world. Thanks to its special fibre length of 35 mm (normal cotton fibres are between 13 and 19 mm long), Peruvian pima cotton is particularly soft, hard-wearing and very tangle-resistant. The result of environmentally friendly hand harvesting is bright white fibres that dye beautifully and are free of scratchy impurities. Pima cotton feels extremely comfortable against the skin, is softer and more absorbent than other cottons, but still durable. And because it is hypoallergenic, it is an excellent choice for people with sensitive skin.
It is highly resistant to fungal attack and requires less pesticide treatment. In this way, the fibres and the environment are protected.
Harvesting by hand is not only better for the environment, but also for the cotton itself. Industrial harvesting breaks the fibre and leaves an unsightly yellow tinge and scratchy impurities that affect the smoothness of the cotton. In comparison, the result of hand harvesting is a wonderfully lustrous shade of white that is easy to dye and feels wonderfully soft and smooth against the skin.
