The land of Cashmere was the original source of Natural Organic Cashmere. It is the home of the world's most luxurious fabric. The Van Kukil story began in 1889 in Srinagar Kashmir. Today, the family business is in its 5th generation combining tradition and innovation in design and fabric.
Van Kukil remains true to its core values as a family business committed to creating jobs and lifting the people of Kashmir out of poverty. Van Kukil is fully committed to our environment and works with partners to preserve the luxurious grasslands of Kashmir. Kashmir has always been a natural habitat for cashmere goats made from the finest fibres in the world.
Our cashmere is gently hand-combed in the most sustainable and humane way. A Van Kukil cashmere garment lasts a long time - a symbol of its value. Van Kukil designers are known for their creative aesthetic that combines tradition with modernity, inspired by the world's great fashion capitals.
Kashmir has always been a natural habitat for cashmere goats. With its natural grasslands and cold climate, the region offers the perfect formula for raising goats to produce one of the finest fibres in the world. It takes four goats to produce enough fibre for a single cashmere jumper, while a single sheep can produce enough wool to make up to five woollen jumpers. Cashmere was therefore traditionally considered a luxury fibre, but today casual cashmere products are widely available and affordable. The increasing global demand for cashmere and the resulting increase in the goat population are destroying the grasslands of cashmere.
Van Kukil Cashmere is fully committed to our environment and the preservation of Kashmir's lush grasslands. We work with partners like Sustainable Fibre to support efforts on the ground in Kashmir to reverse the desertification that has taken place.
The most sustainable and humane way to harvest Kashmir is through gentle combing from the goat, and Van Kukil ensures that this method is always used. Van Kukil respects 'FAIR TRADE' and therefore we cut out unnecessary middlemen in the production process to get the fair price that the shepherds receive for their cashmere.
Van Kukil helps create jobs, helps lift people out of poverty and contributes to economic growth and improved living standards. Van Kukil creates around 1,100 jobs for local people. About two-thirds of these jobs are held by women. For many of these women, this is their first gainful employment, their first job outside the home, and thus a first step towards self-employment.
Equality and non-discrimination in the workplace is a value that is highly valued. All Van Kukil Cashmere employees have the right to equal opportunities and equal treatment, and all employers have a corresponding obligation to ensure that the company is free from discrimination and harassment.
