About Shoto

Shoto Shoes is a shoe brand from Italy. The label was founded in 1991 by brothers Simone and Stefano Medori, but its history goes back to the 1960s. The label's speciality is an antique-looking vintage look achieved with special manufacturing techniques and the use of traditional designs.

Women's and men's collection

Shoto Shoes has a women's and a men's line ("Shoto Donna" and "Shoto Uomo") in its programme. While the Shoto shoes for men are low shoes or ankle boots, Shoto shoes for women also include some knee-high boots. The Shoto boots are available in variants with and without lacing. In addition to the brand's typical boots and ankle boots, there are also elegant men's low shoes and light loafers.

Most models are in a wide range of brown tones, from a light reddish brown to almost black dark brown. A few models have more unusual colours: there are men's shoes in deep dark blue and women's low shoes in a fresh, grassy light green. To complement these, leather bags with a similar look to the shoes and a jewellery collection have recently been offered under the same label.

Third-generation family business

Although the company was only founded in 1991, its history goes back much further: as early as the 1960s, shoemaker Graziano Medori began making shoes by hand in the small town of Montegranaro in the Italian region of Marche. Soon Graziano's production went from a simple one-man workshop to a manufacturing business with employees. His son Zeno took the step towards internationalization, he developed the company further and opened up international markets with completely new customer groups.

In the meantime, the third generation of the Medori family is active in the company, which officially bears the name "Calzaturificio Medori Stefano". The brothers Simone and Stefano Medori, grandsons of the company founder Graziano Medori, put the company on a completely new footing when they introduced the brand name Shoto Shoes in 1985. The brand identity was completely new on the shoe market at the time. With it, the Italian company successfully appealed to individualists who wanted to defy short-lived fashion trends with durable, timeless products.

Handwork as part of the brand identity

Over many decades, the processing techniques have been refined and developed again and again. Today, the third generation of the Medori family combines traditional manufacturing techniques with modern processing methods. The goal of producing durable and robust shoes with a traditional look has never been lost sight of.

To this day, all shoes are made by hand at the company's headquarters in Montegranaro. This is a fundamental part of the brand philosophy and is strongly emphasised by the company. To this day, all models are created in the quaint-looking production halls in Montegranaro. The label has succeeded in combining traditional craftsmanship with a modern, strong brand identity.

Exceptional style

The signature style of Shoto shoes are mid-height boots made of smooth leather that changes from dark brown to light reddish brown. This antique Wild West look is achieved through a special finishing process called "Caos". The collection also includes some low shoe models as well as suede models.

What all models of this brand have in common is that they look "old" in some way: This retro and vintage style runs through the entire collection. Even when new design innovations are introduced, they are always based on traditional models. For example, some models incorporate pleats that give a soft, "crumpled" look. The only cautious approach to more modern shoe shapes in the women's collection are some sporty low shoes that are inspired by classic sneakers.

Robust and suitable for the wilderness

Some shoes have traditional leather soles, while many models also have rubber soles with a deep tread. This makes them suitable for walks in the forest, for work on the riding stables or in the garden. Even though hardly anyone will use such high-priced shoes for this, Shoto shoes look as if they are indestructible. In a sense, this makes them the SUV among shoes: robust and suitable for the wilderness, but at the same time modern and stylish.

Exotic leathers

Besides the usual calfskin, Shoto Shoes also uses many unusual types of leather. These include buffalo leather from Egypt as well as deer, elk or horse leather and even kangaroo leather. The company points out that all leathers are either farmed or sustainably hunted. All leathers are tanned using environmentally friendly processes.

Exclusive manufacturing techniques

Special processes, some developed by the company itself, are used in the production of the shoes to give the leather its typical vintage look. The use of special brushing, sanding, polishing and dyeing techniques results in a look that makes these shoes unmistakable. It is virtually an artificial patina that makes brand-new shoes look as if they have been with the wearer for half his or her life.

Some models even have a distinct "used look" that makes them look as if they have been worn for many years under the harshest conditions.
One of the typical Shoto techniques is dip-dyeing: this involves dipping the finished shoe together with the laces into a dye bath instead of using pre-dyed leather. The shoes then have to dry for up to 24 hours.

In addition, specially developed abrasive processes are developed, such as the "Stone Wash" technology, in which the shoes are rubbed with stones in a kind of large washing machine. This process, reminiscent of the technique used for jeans, produces an antique-looking suede with a soft surface. With the "Tamponato" method, the colour is dabbed on with a brush. With "Elefantwash", the shoe is washed with stones and dyed at the same time. The result is a very rough leather, reminiscent of the skin of an elephant.

Bags and purses

Since 2017, the company's collection has also included purses as well as two models of bags and a backpack made of leather. Similar materials and processing techniques are used for these as for the shoes, so that these accessories also bear the special, unmistakable Shoto style.

Some of the purses are made from the leather from the horse's hindquarters, which shows a particularly pronounced wrinkle grain. Due to the widely varying leather qualities, each purse is truly unique. This makes the purses and bags an excellent addition for lovers of the traditional Italian brand.

Sterling Collection

With the "Sterling Collection" there is also a jewellery line. It consists of bracelets and pearl necklaces made of stones and semi-precious stones such as jade or agate. The basic form of Shoto jewellery is always the pearl necklace. Again and again, very unusual materials such as fossil stones, mammoth ivory, fossilised dinosaur bones or even meteorites are used to make the beads. Only fossil fragments are processed and no large pieces of bone are destroyed. The mammoth ivory comes from finds in the permafrost of Alaska.

In all the jewellery, the focus is on the material with its special look, not on its shape. The beads are combined with sterling silver parts, which are traditionally handcrafted in the southwest of the USA. These silver parts take a back seat to the stone beads. Gold is not used. In keeping with the product philosophy of the shoes, the jewellery pieces also have a rustic look, although they are also comparatively high-priced. The jewellery collection is not produced at the company's headquarters in Italy, but by a partner company in Germany (Wuppertal).

Where to buy Shoto shoes

Shoto shoes are only sold through specialist retailers. We have been offering them for years at our Oldenburg shop and through our own online shop. Can I also buy them on Amazon ? Of course not - but let's be honest: a product like Shoto shoes and Amazon don't go together! The shoes are purely retail products and require advice. Shoto shoes are a durable product that you will enjoy for a long time. Therefore, you should always buy them from a specialist retailer in order to experience the unique feel of these shoes and to be able to touch them before you decide on a pair.
We are on site in Oldenburg and are also happy to advise our out-of-town customers by phone.
